The Wallflowers were formed in Los Angeles by Jakob Dylan and his childhood friend Tobi Miller, who played guitar. They recruited Barrie Maguire on bass and Peter Yanowitz on drums, and released their self-titled debut album in 1992. The album was a commercial failure, and the band was dropped by their label, Virgin Records.
The band went through a period of hiatus and personnel changes, with only Dylan and Yanowitz remaining from the original lineup. They signed with Interscope Records and began working on their second album with producer T-Bone Burnett, who had previously worked with Bob Dylan. They also added two new members: Rami Jaffee on keyboards and Greg Richling on bass.
The result was Bringing Down the Horse, which was released in May 1996. The album received critical acclaim and commercial success, thanks to the exposure from MTV and radio stations.
